Abstract

Tourism practice nourishes stories that allow the interpretation of attractions. Its design is usually hand in hand with a marketing of tourist destinations that responds to hegemonic interests. These are frequently elaborated from a positivist perspective, lacking a critical view of specific socio -historical processes. In this way, the seemingly neutral reproduction of these speeches replicates the idea of a mythical past, away from territorial reality. Are there new ways to develop these stories that move away from empty looks? What tools can allow their renewal, without losing historical rigor? How could these new forms contribute to the authenticity of tourist experiences?

This communication reflects on the possibilities that recent history can contribute to the creation of new tourist stories from interdiscipline. To do this, it takes as a prison in the city of Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, also known as the end of the end of the world, today converted into a museum and a complementary attraction of the offer of this destination.

The current interpretation of this attraction emphasizes crystallized historical aspects in the prison processes of the first half of the twentieth century and set aside the socio -historical linkage of this space to the recent Fuegian reality. In this sense, the idea of the negative as part of the past is presented and leaves the present exempt from conflict.

In this context, recent history enriches tourist stories by providing various data that clarifies and diversify consolidated constructs around specific attractions. On the other hand, tourism, for its informative quality, helps to make visible facts and historical processes of the territories in which it develops. In addition, due to its massive character, it awakens interest and allows access to historical knowledge to multiple sectors of the population.
