Abstract

Introduction: suicide is a health problem due to the social, psychological and economic impact it has on families and the country.

Objective: to evaluate the management of the Suicide Prevention Program in Pinar del Río. 2015-2020, at the Primary Health Level.

Method: descriptive, observational and retrospective study, from 2015 to 2020, surveying fifty health care workers of the Hermanos Cruz polyclinic to explore knowledge about said Program, in a universe of 1840 deceased and a sample of 400, belonging to said polyclinic, taking into account inclusion - exclusion criteria.

Results: predominance of male sex, between 30-59 years old, of predominantly europoid ancestral affinity. Arterial hypertension, minor psychiatric diseases and patients who self-medicate anxiolytics are the main risk factors and the most used suicide method is hanging, mainly in males. Lack of knowledge of the Program on the part of health care workers and the inadequate functioning and interrelation of the Mental Health Center are demonstrated.

Conclusions: the male sex predominated in ages between 30-59 years, of Europoid ancestral affinity through the use of the noose as the chosen method. Arterial hypertension, minor psychiatric diseases and patients who self-medicate anxiolytics are the main risk factors for this behavior. The lack of knowledge of the Program on the part of physicians and nurses in the health area and the inadequate functioning and interrelation between the Community Mental Health Center and the Primary Health Level is evident.
