Abstract

Introduction: accidents in children are considered a public health problem worldwide. Its high prevalence makes it necessary to study the problem taking into consideration social, economic and cultural characteristics, as well as family dynamics, in order to implement appropriate strategies for accident promotion and prevention.

Objective: to analyze the prevalence of accidents in children and the associated risk factors. Methods: a bibliographic review was carried out in the databases PubMed, SciELO, different articles and books dealing with pediatric accidents.

Conclusions: it was identified that the types of accidents and injuries vary according to the age group, prevailing as types of injuries: wounds, burns, fractures, and the rest, superficial, a relationship between parents' schooling and accidents, and the home as the most propitious environment. The need to reinforce preventive measures at home to avoid accidents in children is reaffirmed.
