Introduction: consumerist lifestyles and lifestyles have been established in modern life. The habit of smoking in adolescence from an early age favors the increase of various health problems.

Objective: to determine the level of knowledge about smoking among adolescents in Clinic #13, Minas Popular Council, "José Elías Borges" Polyclinic, during the period from June 2020 to May 2022.

Method: a descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out. The universe consisted of 94 adolescents and the sample consisted of 89, selected by non-probabilistic sampling by criteria, theoretical and empirical methods were used for data collection such as interview and questionnaire, the statistical analysis was performed using frequency distribution and percentage.

Results: adolescents between 16 and 18 years of age, male and with an approved high school level, predominated as an associated disease, predominantly gastritis. The reasons for starting the habit were mainly conditioned by the influence of friends; in general, adolescents have an inadequate level of knowledge since they are unaware of the consequences of smoking on their health.

Conclusions: adolescence is the time when smokers mainly start smoking, therefore, preventive work is necessary from early stages of life.
