Introduction: Gastric cancer has been for many years one of the main causes of mortality due to neoplasms in the world.
Objective: To clinically and epidemiologically characterize gastric cancer in patients over 20 years of age diagnosed at the 3rd Congress Hospital.
Methods: A descriptive, prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted from June 2018 to June 2022. The universe and sample consisted of the 54 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of gastric cancer who attended Hospital 3er Congreso. The data were obtained from the medical records filed in the statistics department of the referred Hospital, subsequently recorded in an Excel database, using the simple percentage method.
Results: there was a predominance of females over males and the age group 70-79 years with 38,9 %. Only 13 patients had a family history of pathology and 18 had a personal history of gastritis. The 70,3 % ingested risk food and 100 % presented pain.
Conclusions: in Pinar del Rio, men older than 70 years old are more prone to suffer from gastric cancer; in most cases, people do not maintain a healthy diet. Pain is a characteristic symptom present in most patients with gastric cancer.
