Introduction: since man is a bio-psycho-social being, the study of mental health is of great value.
Objective: to determine the state of mental health in patients of the Medical Clinic 59 of the Luis Augusto Turcios Lima University Polyclinic.
Method: observational, descriptive, longitudinal and retrospective study. The study population consisted of 282 families, with a sample of 181 families (445 patients).
Results: 54,31 % of the patients were female, 17,27 % were between 50 and 59 years of age and 33,25 % of them had completed high school. Eighty-two patients were retired or certified, 67 were students, 30 were housewives and 11 reported that they did not work. Of the patients, 12,81% were self-employed. The predominant somatic diseases were arterial hypertension (34,16 %) and diabetes mellitus (12,58 %). Epilepsy (0,90 %), depression (0.67 %) and schizophrenia or psychosis (0,67 %) were observed in 0,90 % of the patients. Smoking was present in 5,84 % of the population and alcoholism in 0,90 %.
Conclusions: there is an aging population, with a high level of schooling. Unemployment rates were mainly conditioned by retirements and the presence of a high number of students. Arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus are risk factors for the development of dementia. Epilepsy and depression were present in the study population.
