Introduction: Nutritional support in the critically ill patient is of vital importance because of its impact on morbidity and mortality, length of stay and preservation of tissue mass among others. Nutritional support should be guaranteed to all critically ill patients ideally by the most effective route. Objectives: To offer guidelines for optimal nutritional care to critically ill patients. To identify patients at risk of poor nutritional energy nutrition, to define energy, protein and micronutrient requirements to maintain optimal nutritional and metabolic status in critically ill patients and to establish serial monitoring of the effect and efficacy of nutritional support. Methods: A bibliographic review was carried out through the consultation of 23 bibliographic references, 75% of them belonging to the last 5 years, all in the period from February 15 to 24, 2022. Results: With this bibliographic review it was possible to deepen and outline goals with respect to improving the nutrition of critically ill patients through more effective methods and with greater responsibility. Conclusions: Nutritional therapy is of crucial importance to our ability to manage disease in general and infection, surgery and trauma in particular. The purpose of nutritional therapy in these patients is to maintain or improve nutritional status and to prevent and treat malnutrition by maintaining body tissue, activating plasma protein stores, and preventing macro- and micronutrient deficiencies.
