Introduction: arterial hypertension (AHT) constitutes one of the most important medical-health problems of contemporary medicine in developed countries and its control is the cornerstone on which action must be taken to significantly reduce morbidity and mortality due to coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular and renal diseases in the geriatric age group.
Objective: to evaluate the effectiveness of an educational strategy on aspects related to the prevention of arterial hypertension in the elderly.
Methods: an intervention study was carried out in hypertensive older adults belonging to the CMF 36 of La Palma municipality, from September 2020 to September 2022. The universe consisted of all hypertensive older adults in the clinic and the sample consisted of 164 hypertensive patients according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Percentage analysis was used as the statistical method. Results: the predominant age group was 70-79 years, male. The most frequent level of schooling was junior high school with 46,3 %. Before the intervention, knowledge levels regarding risk factors, signs and symptoms of hypertension, treatment, diet and physical exercise, respectively, were inadequate, but this was not the case after the educational strategy was applied, in which the patients in the study revealed that they had adequate knowledge at the beginning of the intervention.
Conclusions: the development of the educational strategy implemented allowed to increase the knowledge about arterial hypertension and thus improve the quality of life of the patients.
