Abstract

Perioperative malnutrition is associated with increased morbidity and mortality and, even knowing this reality, up to 65% of patients undergoing surgery. Malnutrition in the critically ill patient is a common problem and its most important consequence is increased morbidity and mortality. A total of 17 bibliographic references were used to describe the importance of nutrition in the perioperative patient. The objectives of perioperative nutritional support are to minimize the negative protein balance avoiding malnutrition; to maintain the immunological function improving postoperative recovery.
