Abstract

Introduction: arterial hypertension has a high incidence, the frequency of hypertensive crisis is relatively low, even though mortality due to this event is still very high.

Objective: to apply an educational intervention to reduce the frequency of hypertensive crisis in patients of clinic 6 of Viñales municipality in 2018.

Methods: an educational intervention was carried out, the universe consisted of 120 hypertensive patients, a sample of 47 patients who presented hypertensive crisis on one or more occasions in 2018 was selected, theoretical, empirical and descriptive statistical methods were used, the Wilconsun Chi-square statistic was applied. The study was developed in three moments: a diagnosis of the problem, another one elaborating the educational intervention strategy and the last one evaluating the results of the intervention program before and after its application.

Results: there was a predominance of the male sex and the age group from 40 to 60 years; they were in stage I of the disease, most of them presented headache and chest pain as symptoms; before the intervention they presented up to two hypertensive crises, after the intervention most of them did not present crises, the modifiable risk factors present were related to animal fat intake, not practicing physical exercise and salt intake; before the intervention they did not know the disease, after the intervention their knowledge was good, as well as the therapeutic management improved.

Conclusions: the educational intervention program applied to hypertensive patients was satisfactory in reducing hypertensive crises, improving the health status and quality of life of the patients.
