Introduction: As a natural event, motherhood should be free of complications and, therefore, death. Deaths derived from pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium are considered, for the most part, avoidable with current medical resources; nevertheless, more than half a million women die each year worldwide from these causes.
Objective: To characterize the morbimortality of extremely severe maternal deaths admitted to the Intensive Care Service of the General Teaching Hospital "Abel Santamaría Cuadrado" between January 2014 and December 2019.
Methodological design: An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out. The universe consisted of 290 cases. The data were obtained by reviewing the patients' medical records. The variables were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics.
Results: The majority of the mothers belonged to the 20-29 years age group with 47.9% of the total, mortality was 1.3%. Puerperal hemorrhage was the main cause of admission followed by infections. Hypovolemic shock and respiratory infections were the most frequent complications. 58.1% of patients were ventilated for less than 2 days.
Conclusions: Patients aged 20-29 years predominated and 3 patients died. Puerperal hemorrhage was the main cause of admission. Hypovolemic shock and respiratory infections were the most frequent complications. Most patients were ventilated for less than 2 days.
